What causes a garage door to come off track?
A door usually comes off track because a cable slipped or broke, a spring snapped and let the door drop, a track was bent, or worn rollers and loose brackets let it slip. Around Bourbonnais, strong wind on flat, open land is another common cause, especially on wide doors without a strut.
If your garage door is hanging crooked, one side lower than the other, with rollers out of the track, it has come off track. Below is a checklist for what to do, what likely caused it in Bourbonnais, and what the fix costs.
1. Make it safe
Switch off the opener; more cycles mean more bending. Unplug it if the door is down. If the door is up or tilted, get everyone out of the garage. Pushing it back by hand is a bad idea, given the weight and the wound springs.
2. Look at the cables
Is one cable slack or off its drum? Is it frayed or broken? A cable failure drops one side of the door and pulls rollers out of the track. Cables fray and rust most at the bottom brackets.
3. Look at the spring
Is the coil above the door split? When a spring breaks, the fall can be violent enough to throw a cable and twist the door out of line.
4. Think about the wind
This is a big one around here. On flat, open land, a strong gust can push hard on a garage door, especially a wide one. It can bow the top section, loosen the hinges, and in a bad storm push rollers right out of the tracks. Doors with no strut across the top are most at risk.
5. Check the track
Any kinks, or a section leaning off the wall? Bumpers, bikes and lawn tractors do this. A kinked track squeezes the rollers until they pop free.
6. Check the rollers and brackets
Cracked or bearing-worn rollers shimmy and slide out. Brackets loosen gradually, especially on doors that take a lot of wind, and the track shifts.
7. Call for the repair
Clamps go on, tension comes off, and the door is lined back up. Both cables are renewed together, kinked track is trued or swapped, tired rollers come out and brackets get snugged down. If wind was the cause, a strut can be added to stiffen the door. A balance check and test cycles close it out.
What it costs
This site's price table lists $120 to $245 for realigning the door, $175 to $325 for cables or drums, and $195 to $335 for a new length of track. You hear the figure first.
Preventing it
Look over cables and hinges every spring and fall. Snug up brackets. Sweep the tracks. Ask about a strut for a wide door that takes the wind. A door that starts running lopsided deserves a call to (815) 642-2423 before it derails.
